Tired of seeing the first letter of your name when talking to ChatGPT?

In this tutorial, I’ll cover how to add a profile picture to your ChatGPT account to personalize the whole experience.

What To Know

By default, your ChatGPT account will display the letter of your first name:

That’s because ChatGPT as well as its owner OpenAI don’t allow you to directly upload a picture into your account.

Instead, you need to use another service called Gravatar, which, by the way, is the same platform that’s being used to show profile pictures for this (and any other WordPress) site.

Adding a profile picture to ChatGPT is free & available for both free and Plus users

Gravatar is particularly useful for those participating in various online communities as your profile picture is being synced across platforms.

Plus, OpenAI is able to save a few k’s as they don’t have to host those images on their side.

Now that we have the why, let’s get started with adding your profile picture to your ChatGPT account.

Step 1: Create a Gravatar Account

Begin by navigating to the Gravatar website in any web browser.

Then, select the option to “Sign Up” in the top-right corner.

Next, complete the sign-up form with your email address, a username, and a password.

It’s crucial to use the same email address that you registered with ChatGPT.

Gravatar will send you a confirmation link to the said email, which you need to confirm.

By completing these steps, you’ll establish a Gravatar account, enabling you to update the profile photo shown on your ChatGPT account.

2. Upload An Image

Once you clicked on the link, you will be redirected back to Gravatar.

The following window should appear, asking you to upload an image of yourself:

Simply click on ‘Upload image’ and select an appropriate visual.

Any image featuring explicit or violent content may lead to a ban, so please remain PG.

And that’s about it. Your chat interface should now look somewhat like this:

It may take a few hours for everything to completely sync, so please be patient and don’t make any changes.

The profile picture should appear both on desktop and mobile.

However, mobile may take longer to fully sync, likely because different APIs are being used in the background.

You’ve now learned how to add an image to your ChatGPT account.
